Paddling in Virginia ~ Spring ~ Summer ~ Fall

Join Bill and Mary Burnham on the unspoiled waters of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The authors of "Kayaking for Everyone" have been paddling, hiking and writing about Virginia for nearly 20 years and now bring their signature "Paddle with the Authors" adventures on Chesapeake Bay kayak camping tripsB&B-based Weekend Adventures, and week-long expeditions along the Atlantic barrier islands on the Virginia Seaside Water Trail. Start with a sunset paddle, add a hang-gliding flight or wine tasting, sprinkle with barrier island sand, then fold in the comfort of an island campsite or a cozy bed-and-breakfast and you have the makings for a life-changing experience. We take care of all the details for you. Burnham Guides has a custom trip for beginners, advanced, families and groups

Chesapeake Bay Kayak Camping 3-5 days

Our small group, fully-outfitted trips are the perfect introduction to the great adventure of kayak camping, or a longer expedition for more advanced paddlers with their own equipment.

We lead you through the salt marshes of Virginia's Eastern Shore, an Audubon-sanctioned Important Birding Area. We explore small beaches and tidal creeks through Parker's Marsh Natural Area Preserve, and end in the 1680 Colonial port of Onancock, offering dining and historic lodgings for pre/post trip.

A stay on the grounds of an historic estate and an oyster roast can be arranged!

B&B Based Paddling Adventures 3-5 days

We turn the weekend into the perfect mix of Eastern Shore nature and small town charm. We'll paddle Onancock Creek at sunset for a beach supper, Chesapeake Bay marshes and seaside islands by day, and reward you at a charming B&B and dinner out in the 1680 Colonial port town of Onancock, VA. Add an introductory tandem hang gliding flight with Virginia Hanggliding, a kayak winery tour with SouthEast Expeditions, a boat trip out to the island community of Tangier, or a post-paddle massage! Lodging is included at an historic, family-run B&B in Onancock that is walking or biking distance to shops, galleries and eateries.

Virginia's Seaside Water Trail 3-7 days

Spend a weekend or a week on the Seaside Water Trail along the Virginia Eastern Shore's protected barrier islands. Camping is not allowed on these pristine islands due to bird nesting, so we will arrange land support to take you to a lodge or B&B each evening. We can customize a trip for all abilities, including the full length of the 70-mile peninsula from Chincoteague to Kiptopeke, the longest undeveloped shoreline on the East Coast.

Discover, Interact, Explore, Have Fun

The ultimate high energy adventure cruise with hands-on feet-wet mind-on experiences.

“An interactive experience that differs from all the others”

Hop aboard, kick off your shoes and get ready for an adventure you'll never forget.

We go on an interactive skill building experience. We will be on a floating classroom, a research vessel with hands-on feet wet lessons.

One of the many things we will be doing is getting off the boat on the sandbars to go dig in in the mud for clams. Maybe we can catch some and eat them!

Then back on the boat to cruise to a cramping spot where you will be pulling crab pots on board to identify and see the day's catch. If you have the courage I will teach you how to hold a crab without getting pinched.

Navigating our way to Shell Island Beach we stop to get off the boat for some shell collecting.

Back on the boat to hunt for jellyfish, the captain's favorite thing.

Then we haul in the trawler net to see that it is full of marine life and sea creatures!... this is always a challenge.

Then slow the boat down to enter the shallow waters to identify the birds.

We use all of our senses – sound, touch, taste, and smell – to make our cruises informative and fun.

There is never any pressure, always lots of fun.... you can relax, sit back on the boat and be the official photographer, or you can get into it. This is the real deal to get your hands dirty and feet wet so you will experience the life of the Chincoteague Waterman.

Creating Your Custom Cruise

~ Custom Boat Tours

~ Birding Trips

~ Wildlife Photography

~ Beach Trips to the Barrier Islands

~ Sunset Cruises

Captain Meriwether Payne, a Certified Virginia Ecotour Guide, will create your custom cruise departing from the quaint village of Wachapreague on the Seaside of Virginia's Eastern Shore.

Scenic creeks meander through emerald marshes out to the barrier islands which are part of the Virginia Coast Reserve; a United Nations Biosphere Reserve created by The Nature Conservancy in the early 1970s, and the longest expanse of coastal wilderness remaining on the eastern seaboard of the United States.

These islands are a birders paradise, sheltering more than 250 species of shorebirds, waders, raptors, songbirds, ducks, and geese, which find food in the adjacent bays and salt marshes.  Birding is a year round activity with spring and fall migrating shorebirds, summer nesters and winter waterfowl.  This intricate ecosystem supports hundreds of other species as well and you will also have opportunities to see animals from the all important, yet tiny, fiddler crab, to Diamondback Terrapins, sea turtles, dolphins and the occasional seal.

Beach stops on the islands are easily arranged for picnics, shelling, swimming and we can put the seine net to use and see what creatures are in the water or dig for clams!

Island taxis are available if you simply want to spend the day on the beach; or take a sunset cruise before dinner at one of our fine local restaurants.

Capt. Meriwether is USCG Licensed and insured.   All trips are on a comfortable, new 23' Carolina Skiff carrying up to 6 passengers on trips from 2 to 8 hours and departing from the Wachapreague Town Marina.  Please contact for prices on your custom trip!

Pontoon Cruises

Captain Spider has been exploring the waterways around Assateague & Chincoteague Islands for years. Being USCG licensed, Captain Spider owns and pilots his inspected and insured boat.

Although there are many reasons to cruise with us, here are just a few:

  • 2 hour tour circumnavigating Chincoteague Island taking you to areas most don't see.
  • Specialized tours can be arranged.
  • Birds:
Herons, egrets, terns, ducks, oyster catchers, swans, pelicans, Canada geese, eagles, osprey, laughing gulls (they arrive with the tourists), piping plover and more have been sighted on our cruises. Hundreds of birds migrate through Chincoteague and Assateague in May and October. (Time approximate depending on the weather.)
  • Nature:
Ponies, dolphins, sea turtles, gorgeous sunsets, ocean views could very well be seen. We cannot guarantee what mother nature will provide, but we're sure you'll enjoy your cruise.
  • Photography:
Amateur and professional photographers find this tour an excellent source for their hobby or career. Captain Spider knows how to handle the boat so that you will get that superb shot!
  • Many reasons for a cruise!
Honeymooners have been aboard just after their wedding. Other honeymooners have been aboard MANY years after the wedding!
Engineers have cruised to study Chincoteague from the water.
Groups of women take rides for a "girls only" trip - great for a group getaway, a bachelorette party, birthday party, or a Red Hats group trip.
You can even get married on the boat!
