A singular and epicurean opportunity to learn about aquaculture and viticulture on Virginia's Eastern Shore with our partners at Shooting Point Oyster Company aboard the Oyster Queen in Church Creek and at Chatham Vineyards. Weekends in October and November 2016.

The tour includes an immersive three hour experience in wine and oyster tasting that begins with an oyster farming tour on Church Creek aboard the Oyster Queen with Shooting Point Oyster Company. The water tour is followed by a wine tasting at Chatham Vineyards with oysters on the half shell. The tour price includes a bottle of Chatham's Church Creek wine and a dozen oysters per couple to take home.

Saturdays and Sundays, 1 pm sharp, weather permitting.
Limited to six persons per tour. $100/person

Students will learn about the basic equipment needed for safe wax work, wick sizes and prepping, and types of containers suited for candles. As a bonus, participants can learn about skin care products made from beeswax, including recipes. Participants in this class will learn about beeswax, including how to make it, how it is harvested and cleaned, and other traditional uses.

The Eastern Shore Resource Conservation & Development Council And the Virginia Cooperative Extension, Hampton Roads AREC Present Growing Berries: American Treasure

Berries and berry plants have been treasured by Americans for centuries. Both blackberry and strawberry plants are native to North America and counted among the many treasures early explorers took back to Europe.The Eastern Shore RC&D and Virginia Cooperative Extension, Hampton Roads AREC will present a free workshop on best practices for growing strawberries and blackberries on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Small, mid-sized, and beginning farmers and backyard gardeners are all invited to attend this free workshop to learn proven techniques for success.

Dr. Jayesh Samtani is an Assistant Professor and Small Fruit Extension Specialist at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He is based at the Hampton Roads Agricultural Research and Extension Center in the City of Virginia Beach. His current work is focused on evaluating strawberry and blackberry varieties. Dr. Samtani has done his post-doctoral work on strawberries at University of California, Davis, and his graduate degrees are from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Dudley Rochester will lead the Seminar and discuss the World’s five known Mass Extinction Events, whether we are in the middle of a sixth, and our reactions to it. Rochester is a retired pulmonologist, most recently at the University of Virginia School of Medicine.

These seminars are occasionally rescheduled on short notice. Prospective attendees are urged to check the Seminar’s website (www.SciPhi.org) shortly before a scheduled date.

Science and Philosophy Seminar is an informally organized group that meets more or less regularly to explore and discuss a wide array of topics, ranging from philosophical speculation to scientific research.  All Seminars are open to the public. Admission is free.
