Registration is open for the Eastern Shore Master Naturalists
2014 Basic Training Course

The training, which consists of classroom and field sessions, offers an overview of the special character of the Shore’s natural history led by experts in their field.   Topics covered include botany, geology, forestry, entomology, and ornithology, as well as the natural processes that create the barrier islands and the bayside coasts.

No special skills or knowledge are required – just a curiosity about the Shore’s environment and ecology and how it all works together.    The training is also an ideal way to meet others with similar interests, and it provides an avenue for future participation in citizen science projects, stewardship and outreach.

Lecture on the Lawn at Winona  -  Machipongo

Northampton Historic Preservation Society

Lecture on the Lawn at Winona

If you have an interest in historical plantations in Northampton County, you may wish to join the Northampton Historical Preservation Society on Sunday, September 14th at 2:00 for an afternoon at Winona, the home of Mary and Herman Walker.
Winona is estimated to date somewhere from 1645 to 1681. Its three chimneys are Jacobean in style and unique in Virginia – only the ones at Winona and Bacon’s Castle survive.

The Northampton Historic Preservation Society is requesting a $10 per person donation at the event. They encourage everyone to dress casually and ask guest to bring their own lawn chair and beverage of choice.  The event will be held only if weather permits.

Northampton Historic Preservation Society invites you to become a member of this 101 year old Northampton County organization!

We have planned a number of events for this year, including this popular “Lectures on the Lawn” series where interpretation of the history and preservation of selected local historic homes in Northampton County are showcased.

You will be the first to know about these and other exciting events and activities planned for the future.

Anglers Club Bay Challenge  -  Onancock
Calendar Image

24th Onancock Bay Challenge

Sponsored by the Eastern Shore of Virginia Anglers Club, the 2014 Onancock Bay Challenge will take place this year on Saturday, September 20.

Now in its twenty-fourth year, the popular event emphasizes families and fishing for the diverse fish species available on the Eastern Shore.

Youths 16 and under are eligible to fish for free in the Bay Challenge, while there is only a $25 entry fee for adults. Adult plaques and youth trophies will be awarded for the largest and second-largest entries in eight categories: croaker, spot, bluefish, flounder, gray trout, speckled trout, sand mullet, and red drum (18 to 26 inches long). If you happen to bring in the largest oyster toad, you’ll win something for that, too.

The major category plaques and trophies are sponsored by SeaHawk Sports Center, Don’s Tackle Shop, and Seaworthy Marine. Registered anglers will be eligible for a drawing to win valuable prizes sponsored by PNC Bank, Janet's General Store and Cafe, The Blarney Stone Pub, Mason-Davis Realty, Ben's Carpet, Shore Tire and Auto, Chesapeake Bay Pizza Company, and Christine Murphy-Coldwell Banker.

Anglers must register prior to the event, and all people fishing from the same boat must be registered for the event. Fishing is with rod and reel or hand line only, and begins at 6:30 A.M. Anglers have to present their fish to be weighed in at the Onancock Wharf by 5:30 P.M., and are encouraged to release anything that they will not eat or enter in the event. Sept. 21 is the bad weather day.

Official rules and entry forms are available at Don’s Tackle Shop, SeaHawk Sports Center, Seaworthy Marine, the Onancock Harbormaster’s Office, and on the Angler’s Club website.
