NASA Launch Viewing  -  Wallops Island
(10/7/2015 - 10/12/2015)

NASA Launch Viewing

Launch Window Dates: October 7 – 12

Launch Scheduled Date: October 7

Launch Time: 7 – 9 p.m.

Launch Vehicle: Black Brant IX

Mission: Technology Demo

NASA will flight test a modified Black Brant sounding rocket motor, launch vehicle and spacecraft systems and sub-payload ejection technologies during a suborbital mission between 7 and 9 p.m. EDT, Oct. 6, from the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

The launch and vapor cloud releases, as part of the sub-payload ejection tests, may be seen by residents in the mid-Atlantic region. The launch window runs October 6 through 12.

The flight’s primary objective is to characterize the reformulated Black Brant motor performance in a two-stage configuration.

“The flight also provides an opportunity to test new technologies being developed for space missions and science conducted using sounding rockets,” said Cathy Hesh, technology manager in the Sounding Rocket Program Office at Wallops.

The NASA Wallops Visitor Center will open at 6 p.m. for launch viewing. Once we know what is happening with the weather, I will give you an update on the exact launch date.

Calendar Image

Based in Cape Charles, Virginia, the Eastern Shore Birding and Wildlife Festival is the perfect opportunity to experience the peak of fall bird migration and the wonders of wildlife in a pristine coastal environment.  Surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the southern tip of the Delmarva Peninsula provides a natural “funnel” effect for migrating hawks, warblers and other songbirds in the Fall. While you’re here, explore historic towns and seaside villages, where the traditional waterman’s lifestyle still thrives.

Orquesta Tropikiimba

Saturday, October 10, 2015 - 7:30 PM - Nandua High School

Sponsored by Ed Weber Contracting

This season's first performance on Saturday, October 10th is the ACES debut of Orquesta Tropikiimba, one of the authentic Afro-Caribbean orchestras in the Mid-Atlantic region. Tropikiimba's specialty is a variety of salsa, timba and merengue.  Similar to jazz with its heart and soul vibe, the sound has evolved through the years.  Originating in styles such as rumba and Latin jazz, the genre is characterized by its lively rhythms.  It combines R&B, funk, jazz and even pop sounds into traditional salsa arrangements.
