Not sure what Flatfoot Dancing is? Well, Bill McGlothlin is here to show you how. Using the toes, heel, and ball of the foot to strike and slide across the floor, flat-footing is a percussive dance style that articulates the rhythms of mountain fiddle and banjo music. Come make old-time music with your feet while you move to the rhythm of live Appalachian music played by skilled performers and Eastern Shore fixtures: Allen Philpot, Jeff Madson, Sheila Sheppard, Scott Wade, Dan Crockett and Jeff Gray.

The Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge is proud to host the work of two prominent Shore photographers in a very special exhibition. The works of local photographer and author, Curtis Badger; and Chincoteague based photographers, Darcy and Steve Cole, are on display at our visitor center. These unique and stunning pictures feature over 20 shots of migrating birds, wildlife, scenic vistas, and outdoor life taken on and around our refuge.  

Visitor Center hours:

Opened seasonally Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm through April. Starting May 1st, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday - Sunday

The exhibit is free of charge.

For five weeks, students focus on theater terminology, acting exercises, and the performance of comedy and tragedy! A final showcase is presented on May 3 at 7:30 pm. This is a perfect program for beginner and experienced aspiring actresses & actors! Maximum enrollment is 20 students. 

The workshop is taught by the founder and artistic director, Mary A. Stiegelbauer.  Mary graduated magna cum laude from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a BA in Dance and a minor in Classical Studies. She worked professionally with The Lost Colony (thelostcolony.org) in Manteo, North Carolina for 3 seasons before forming her own company, draMAStic dance works. Mary has an extensive resumé as a teacher and director and is well known to students who have attended theater camp at the Playhouse.

The Eastern Shore Public Library is hosting an educational exhibit, “Uncovering Home: A Visual Essay on Jamestown Archaeology,” on loan from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond.  What’s new on Jamestown Island? Archaeologists from the Jamestown Rediscovery project at Historic Jamestowne are uncovering James Fort’s oldest artifacts, and creating a revised picture of life in the first permanent English settlement in America! This limited security exhibition is perfect for schools, libraries, and art centers.The exhibition’s 12 panels paint a vivid picture of the struggles of the early colonists, while illustrating critical processes of historical archaeology.  Are you looking for ways to generate enthusiasm for SOL-related Virginia history, science, and math? The Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge is hosting the Federal Duck Stamp Artwork Exhibition! This special travelling exhibit, to be displayed at the refuge visitor center, features all 25 pieces of original waterfowl artwork from the 2016 competition, along with the digital format of all 25 pieces from the Jr. Duck Stamp artwork competition. This is the only stop on the Eastern Shore of Virginia for this travelling exhibit.  Visitors can also enjoy the museum collection of vintage waterfowl decoys.

The story takes place in Cape Charles during the 1940s. The clam-digger Hobbs, bitter that his livelihood is being washed away, takes a millionaire investment banker to task for not financing a project that could save the waterman’s culture. With original music by shore favorites such as Thelma Peterson, the show is a rich, historical tribute to the heritage of life on the Eastern Shore.

The Orchestra of the Eastern Shore concludes their season with  "All Baroque,” a return to the roots of classical music with works by Corelli, Albinoni, and Vivaldi. This includes a  performance of J.S. Bach’s Harpsichord Concerto No. 1 in D Minor featuring former OES music director, Lee Jordan-Anders, as harpsichord soloist.

The Orchestra of the Eastern Shore was founded in Onancock, VA in 1999 by Dr. Peter Dundon. It is a string orchestra concentrating on classical repertoire with musicians drawn from surrounding Eastern Shore communities.

5 x 5 is a creative fundraiser and celebration that takes place after the Annual Seafood Festival on Chincoteague Island.  The art show and sale features artworks that are all 5 x 5 incles in size and sell for $55.  The show and sale starts promptly at 5:55 pm when the artwork is revealed to the public for the first time.  Plan to arrive at 5 pm to enjoy food from Bill's Restaurant- margaritas, sangria, beer, and soft drinks available.  A spirited musical performance by Greg Shupe and company will add to the festivities.

The festival offers fresh, Eastern Shore seafood and includes Eastern Shore favorites: raw oysters and clams, clam fritters and strips, single fried oysters, fried fish, steamed shrimp, clam chowder, appetizers, salad bar, grilled chicken, sweet potato fries, boardwalk fries, hush puppies, and cornbread.
