The Best Bay Creek Weekend Ever!

You are invited to join us on May 20-22 for what promises to be one of the most exciting weekends in Bay Creek's history.

It’s not only the weekend of our annual Bay Creek in Bloom celebration, it also marks the grand opening of our Ideal Home Collection, featuring four spectacular homes with views of the Chesapeake Bay, golf course and Cassatt Green.

The Ideal Home Collection at Bay Creek brings together two of the nation’s premier architectural firms and four of the most acclaimed custom builders in Coastal Virginia. But that’s just the beginning of the weekend festivities. The real stars of Bay Creek in Bloom are the more than 250,000 roses, azaleas, hydrangeas and numerous other flowers planted throughout the community since its founding.

We’ll kick it off with a Friday night cocktail reception at one of these beautiful Ideal Living Homes in Bayside Village, followed by a sunset stroll on our private beach on the Chesapeake Bay.

Saturday morning, we’ll gather in The Clock Garden for the traditional ‘Toast to the Roses’, followed by exclusive previews of the Ideal Home Collection and a day of fun activities in Bayside Village.  Saturday will be capped off by our annual Garden Party overlooking the Chesapeake Bay featuring food, drink and entertainment for all.

To join the fun, please call (757) 331-8742 or visit www.BayCreek.net to book your Bay Creek Discovery Package, featuring three days/two nights accommodations, Guided Real Estate Tour of Bay Creek and historic downtown Cape Charles, golf on our Nicklaus or Palmer Signature Course, $50 gift certificate and VIP access to all community amenities for the entire weekend – all for just $229, subject to availability.

The popular Lecture on the Lawn series presented by the Northampton Historical Preservation Society (NHPS) is due to kick off on Sunday, May 22, 2016.  The first in the series will be held at Rinie’s Rest near Machipongo.

The property connects numerous Eastern Shore families, including the Carpenters, Rayfields, Pettits, Dalbys, Floyds, Scotts, Badgers and Doughtys. The graveyard on the property inspires reflections about the people of Northampton County and the times in which they lived. Owner Tommy Rayfield, and several family members will lead the historical exploration of the site.

The Lecture on the Lawn begins at 2:00 pm and should last approximately one hour.  Attendees should bring a lawn chair.  A $10 donation is requested.  Rain date is Sunday, June 5th at 2:00 pm.

Small Garden Tour  -  Eastern Shore

SMALL  GARDEN  TOUR

Saturday May 28th, 2016
9:30 am – 3:30 pm

Saturday, May 28th is the date of the Eastern Shore of Virginia Habitat Small Garden Tour. Appreciating and enhancing nature is the theme of this year’s tour. Maybe the gardens aren’t so small, but they are something you won’t want to miss. Master Naturalists and garden lovers are inviting guests to stroll around the result of their efforts. The tour includes gardens situated on creeks and land-locked gardens, from East Point to Craddockville.

An incredible, home-cooked lunch, including a soup, Zuppa Tuscano, recreated from the Olive Garden’s menu, will be available between gardens at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Pungoteague.

The tour hours are 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Tickets are available  for $25 at The Giving Tree, Sunnyside, Thomas Gardens, Hortco, Appleseed’s, and the Habitat ReStore in Exmore. They will also be available at each garden on the day of the tour for $30.

There are five gardens on the tour from Craddockville through Onancock and details of the tour are on the Habitat web site www.easternshorehabitat.org.

34168 Hyslop Lane
Dr. William Turner, II

At El Maguey Restaurant, Exmore, turn west toward Bayside.  Go .9 miles to Sheild’s Bridge Road, Rt. 178.  Turn left.  Go 3.9  miles to Craddockville Rd/Boston Road.  There is a small cemetery on the right.  Turn left. Go .3 miles; turn right onto Craddock Neck Rd.  Go 1 mile to Hyslop Lane

Down a long lane and just past a stand of pines, the sight of Dr. Turner’s home, backed by the waters of Craddock Creek and framed by boxwood and upright cedars, causes visitors to  sigh in surprise and appreciation of nature. The property, in the family since 1850, was a blank palette when he completed building the home in 1997.  Being a lover of photography, he strategically planted clumps of trees and shrubs to break up the landscape and, due to the fertile farm soil, they have all flourished. Buckeye, hackberry and pecan trees provide shade and fruit along with apple, pear, peach and cherry tree. Fragrant lilacs, hydrangea, and osmanthus dot the property, but Dr. Turner’s favorite plants are the iris still in the shape of the foundation of his grandmother’s home. Then there is the yummy sounding “key lime” hydrangea.  Completing the list of sight and smell components of the property, a lone burnt orange, industrial olive barrel sits under a tree looking like a sculptural feature, but it actually hides fertilizer.  You’ll want one too!

Return to Craddockville Road/ Boston Road.  Turn left.  Continue 5.5 mies on Boston Rd. Turn right  into the driveway at 30359.

30359 Bobtown Road
Peter and Betty Mariner

Park in the back lot.  To leave, exit at the back of the property onto Waterfield St. Turn left. Make another left at Pungoteague Rd. Turn right onto Bobtown Road.

Christened Dunover by a former resident, a more appropriate name now would be Peter’s Playground.  Since 2001, Peter has put his interests in gardening and carpentry to the test building both structures and gardens on the once ivy-covered lawn. Hundred year old deodor cedars hide the Mariner’s 115 year old home while the  long, Japanese-looking arch on the south side of the driveway frames the gazebo in the background, both of which Peter built.  An oriental-like garden surrounds the gazebo.  The shade garden curving its way from the gazebo leads to a small playhouse Peter constructed for grandchildren.  The open back yard is home to a variety of chickens, and a fenced-in Williamsburg-like raised vegetable garden, and an enclosed rose garden with a variety of David Austin roses. Big and tiny hosta thread their way through garden after garden.  Look for the running hosta.

Continue 3.5 miles on Bobtown Rd. to Red Bank Ln. on the left. Go 1.2 mile, making a sharp right.  Continue to 16172  on the left.

16172 Red Bank Lane
Curtis and Lynn Badger

When Curtis and Lynn Badger purchased their 3-acre wooded parcel on Pungoteague Creek in 2005, the trees were so thick it was impossible to see ten feet in front of you.  The Badgers are both Master Naturalists, so they wanted to leave as light a footprint on the land as possible.  Careful not to disturb the land within 100 feet of the wetlands, they have a combination of wood-land, wetland, decorative garden, and kitchen garden. They made it a priority to protect native species such as wax myrtles, hollies, oaks, maples as well as an American beech near the freshwater pond. The fenced vegetable garden holds extra parsley planted for the butterflies.

Curtis, a writer and photographer of birds, butterflies, and other insects says “We have both a garden and a photography studio, so we’re multi-tasking. What we’ve tried to do is to tie everything in, to make it work together, and to leave the landscape healthier than when we found it.”

Return to Bobtown Rd.  Turn left onto Bobtown Rd.  Follow the road for 3.1 miles to Cashville Rd.  Turn left.  Go .6 miles to Locust Grove Rd., the second right. Continue straight as the road turns into Swan Ln.

24220 Swan Lane
Dallas and Peggy Swan

The home of Dallas and Peggy Swan was built in 1950 and originally had sheep grazing over all the property except for close to the house.  Their first step was to remove most of the fences from around the property perimeter, and creating an enclosed area for Ike, their Chesapeake Bay Retriever, to chase balls and sticks. Then Peggy got busy and began planting. There are natural-looking and low maintenance garden beds along the front of the house and around the swimming pool. Planted there are hollies, hydrangeas, phlox, obedient plant, hibiscus, peonies, money plant, crocosmia, daffodils, ferns, budlia, Joe Pye weed, azalea, camellias, lilies, grasses and native wildflowers.

The Swans also have a 1/2 mile of pathways in a walking garden lined with almost all native plants--trees, bushes, and wild flowers--in what used to be a sheep pasture.  There are 16 species of oak trees, hollies, hydrangeas, hibiscus, magnolias, nandina, 3 species of solidago, rudbeckia, Asclepius, and many more.  2 benches are available for resting

Return to Cashville Rd.  Turn right.  Follow Cashville Road until you see a 35 mile an hour sign with East Point attached to the top. Turn right at the very next road, Broadway Road, and follow for .5 miles.  Turn right onto East Point Rd. Stay on this road until you see a circle with a ships wheel. The house is on the water on your left.

15125  Russell Drive
Bob &  Linda  Mormile

Mormile’s house was originally a 1-story commercial block building, known as the Beach House. People came from far and wide to enjoy the water, but the property had no gardens. As soon as Bob and Linda purchased their home in 2001, Linda started researching, designing and building gardens. Loving free-form gardens, Linda planted borders while Bob built raised beds for salt tolerant plants, which work well when next to the creek and open to the elements. Loblolly pine, American holly, euonymus, roses, camellias, hosta, and cactus anchor the plots and provide space for shade-loving perennials and annuals.

In 2008, they built a Koi pond, and Bob transported Koi, one at a time in a cooler, from their northern home. When they finally relocated to their new home, Linda brought her many orchids.
