Shirley Valentine

If given the chance, not to "do it all over again" but to shake up your current routine, would you do it? At 42, Shirley Valentine, suburban British housewife, has been married for more than half her life, raised two children who are still finding their way, and settled into an existence where her primary confidante is her kitchen wall! When her best friend invites her to join in a 2 week holiday in the Greek islands, Shirley decides to make the leap. Then the question becomes whether having finally "drunk a glass of wine in the country where the grape is grown," she'll ever go back....

Shirley is a funny, touching, outrageous, and entirely loveable woman, and an evening with Shirley Valentine, starring Dawn Weston, will inspire you to be brave and marvelous! Be sure to get tickets for you and all your friends soon- you don't want to find yourself left out of the chatter or complaining to the wall that you missed your chance to make a fabulous new friend!

 Dates: July 17,18,24,25,26,31, Aug. 1

Living Shoreline

Eastern Shore Public Library
23610 Front Street
Accomac, VA 23301

Fourth Tuesdays at the Library, an initiative of the Friends of the Eastern Shore Public Library, presents Building a Living Shoreline, with Anne Armstrong and Elise Trelegan from the Chincoteague Bay Field Station, formerly the Marine Science Consortium.

Scientists from the field station, working with community partners, students and volunteers, built the first living shoreline in Accomack County in Greenbackville.  Techniques included planting native grasses and restoring oyster reefs using concrete oyster “castles” that help mitigate sea level rise while bringing back the bay’s oyster population.

Armstrong and Trelegan will also discuss other ongoing research projects at the field station.

Wednesday, July 29: The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company’s annual Pony Penning always takes place on the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday in the month of July.  The world famous Chincoteague Ponies swim from Assateague Island to ChincoteagueIsland (less than 1000 yards) on Wednesday at the first “slack tide”.  The first foal ashore is named King or Queen Neptune and is given away in a raffle later that day at the Carnival Grounds.  The Carnival opens immediately after the swim.  Proceeds from this event fund the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company.  Monies are used for maintenance and purchase of equipment and care of the pony herd.  A free shuttle runs the day of the swim to transport the 40,000 attendees to the swim site since parking is very limited to handicap only at Memorial Park.

Thursday, July 30: From 8:00 a.m. until noon an auction is held at the Carnival Grounds.   People begin arriving around 7:00 a.m. to get a front row seat.  The number of foals sold each year is determined by the Fire Company.  The ponies are checked and cleared by veterinarians before being released to their new owners.  Cash, Master Card, and Visa are accepted as payment.

Friday, July 31: Adult ponies swim back to Assateague Island to live another year in the wild.
