Although this class is designed for beginning art students it has proved to be very valuable for atrists at any level who desire to improve their drawing skills. What you learn in this class is essential for painting realistically in any medium and even abstract painters will find it useful. The iconic and inspiring musical set in the East Village of New York City in the late 1990's, RENT is about falling in love, finding your voice, and living for today. Winner of the TONY Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, RENT has become a pop cultural phenomenon with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages. Based loosely on Puccini's La Boheme, Jonathan Larson's RENT follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.  How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves, and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical. This is theatre at its best -- exuberant, passionate, and joyous.

Party in the Park  -  Exmore
Calendar Image

with a

It’s a neighborhood block party with a purpose. National Night Out, celebrated nationwide each August, is designed to strengthen community spirit and unite against crime.  Exmore’s Police Department is joining police departments across the US in observing National Night Out, set for Tuesday, August 2, 2016. Residents of Exmore and all neighboring communities are invited to participate in this town-wide event highlighted by a Party in the Town Park from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

With one night a year earmarked for citizens to get to know their neighbors and their local law enforcement officers, National Night Out heightens awareness of crime and drug prevention efforts spearheaded by local officials. At the same time, it sends a message to the criminal element that citizens are organized and ready to work in unity to keep their streets and neighborhoods safe.

The local event for Northampton County is co-sponsored by the Town of Exmore Police Department in partnership with the National Association of Town Watch.

Barrier Island Center's "Introduction to Essential Oils" Class  -  Machipongo
Calendar Image

"Introduction to Essential Oils"

Class Instructor: Lara Hubbard

Cost: $20.

Essential oils contain the life force of the plant from which they are derived. The art of essential oils has been around well before Biblical times, and is quite often referenced in the Bible. These powerful drops have been used in many different cultures for their healing abilities and have only recently made their way into our culture. The benefits and uses of essential oils are quite vast and are starting to be found in many of the "natural" products available in stores these days.

Although essential oils are often thought of for their healing properties, their uses also range from household products like all-purpose cleaners and deodorizers to beauty products like body butter and foot scrubs.

In this introduction class, we will discuss the most common oils used - both "singles" and "blends." We will then break out into a workshop and have some fun!! Participants will experience the oils first hand and will learn the craft of a few DIYs with oils. All the items you make, you will take home to enjoy!

VIMS Public Seminar Series- Hormones and Migrating Blue-winged Teal by Dr. Morgan Wilson  -  Wachapreague

Public Seminar Series

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science Eastern Shore Laboratory will hold their public seminar series on the first Wednesday of the month.  We hope you will be able to join us.

Hormones and Migrating Blue-winged Teal: A Waterfowl Species that Migrates Like a Songbird

 Dr. Morgan Wilson

Associate Professor

Hollins University, Roanoke VA

Blue-winged Teal initiate southward migration from their breeding grounds in late summer, displaying a fall migratory pattern unique among North American waterfowl and similar to that of many Neotropical songbirds.  Corticosterone, the major avian hormone of stress and energy regulation, is known to influence migratory physiology in songbirds.  However, little is known about this response in migratory waterfowl.  Dr. Wilson explores how blue-winged teal hormone levels compare to songbirds and what this means for migration.

  Virginia Institute of Marine Science

40 Atlantic Avenue

The seminar is free and open to everyone.  Seating capacity is 60 people and space is available on a first come-first serve basis.  Coffee and light refreshments will be provided.  For further information call VIMS at 787-5816.

By Joe Fehre

The devastating effects of the Ash Wednesday Storm of 1962 led to the end of development plans on Assateague and provided an opportunity for the National Park Service to acquire the land. Joe Fehrer shares his personal account of living on the island during Assateague's historical shift from becoming "Ocean Beach", the next seaside resort, to the creation of a National Seashore in 1965. Lunch provided, cost: $10. Choice of Turkey, Ham, or Veggie sandwich and choice of Cole Slaw, Potato Salad, or chips. Also cookie and water.
