The training is an opportunity to explore the Shore’s natural resources with classes and field trips led by experts in its ornithology, geology, forestry, entomology and botany as well as the natural processes that create the barrier islands and the bayside coasts.

Since the Eastern Shore chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists was chartered in 2007, graduates of the 40-hour course have volunteered thousands of hours to numerous research, stewardship, and educational projects that have enhanced the environment and contributed to a growing base of knowledge about the shore.  Last year, volunteers donated more than 5,000 hours to various projects.

They have conducted bird counts on Wreck Island, surveyed the bayside beaches for the rare Northeastern Beach Tiger Beetle, helped with oyster restoration projects, removed invasive species such as the Tree of Heaven at the Mutton Hunk Natural Area Preserve, and engaged in hundreds of outreach projects such as the annual Watershed Walk.   Since 2009 more than 440 acres of migratory songbird habitat have been restored by Eastern Shore Master Naturalists.

Studio Renovation & Open Studio Tour

I feel it's almost Christmas because I'm super excited about a big studio renovation that's nearing completion! With the professional help of our friend and contractor Scott Simms from Coastal Craftsman Builders, we're finally turning the garage into a beautiful studio/gallery. It will be so nice to finally have a space where the mice don't use the edges of my stacks of colored paper to decorate their nest with! We're looking forward to showing off the new studio during the Annual Artisan Guild Holiday Open Studio Tour on Friday, November 25 & Saturday, November 26 (Thanksgiving weekend). I hope you'll put these dates on your calendar to come and check out the gorgeous result and celebrate the start of the Holiday Season with us! My friend and guest artist W.T. Wilkins, will be showing his stunning wood turnings in my studio as well.

Thanks for following my artwork and art events and we look forward to seeing everyone soon!

Happy fall,

Carole.

Northampton Historic Preservation Society presents Lecture on the Lawn at Park Hall - Oldest Standing Residence in  -  Eastville
(9/25/2016)

The fall installment of the "Lecture on the Lawn" series begins at 2:00 PM at Park Hall in Eastville.  Presented by the Northampton Historic Preservation Society (NHPS) the public is invited to bring a lawn chair and enjoy an informative and entertaining afternoon "on the lawn."

Nestled in a picturesque setting, Park Hall, the oldest standing residence in Eastville, can easily be overlooked on Willow Oak Road.  Since its construction in 1750 there have been many additions and changes making Park Hall a gem to be cherished.  The continuing and attentive care of the present owners, Andrea and David Scott, is obvious and will serve to perpetuate this unique old home for years to come.  The property includes a 19th-century smokehouse and a small cemetery with graves that include members of the Parker, Stratton and Thomas families.

Attendees will hear about the history of Park Hall and the stories of the families who have lived in the beautifully preserved historic home.

The Lecture on the Lawn begins at 2:00 pm and should last approximately one hour. Attendees should bring a lawn chair.

A $10 donation is requested.  Rain date is Sunday, October 2nd at 2 PM

Our 6X Champion "Bristol" and his cria "By The Bay's Estero" along with the rest of our colorful herd will be here to welcome visitors.  After feeling their luxurious fiber we'll show you the many ways it can be used.  You'll learn about fleece preparation, carding, dyeing, spinning, weaving and felting!

Tara uses the fleece from our alpacas to create beautiful unique items for our Farm Store.  You'll find woven scarves, shawlettes, hats, fingerless gloves, handbags, baby sweaters, decorative pillows and more! We carry yarn and roving made from our herd in both natural and hand dyed colors.  Teddy bears, felted alpacas and finger puppets all beautifully crafted in Peru will be available in addition to our ever popular, warm and wonderful " By The Bay Alpacas" socks!  One lucky visitor will win a free pair!

Fall is the perfect time to "explore the Shore" and By The Bay Alpacas is just one of many places to visit. We hope you will be able to stop by that weekend! We truly appreciate the support from our community.  Follow us on Facebook and we look forward to seeing you soon!
