Artisans Guild - Eastern Shore of Virginia   --   Parksley
Client Pic

The Artisans Guild, a non-profit organization, began life in 1996. A group of interested individuals got together to discuss the organization of an Eastern Shore Artisans group. The consensus from the start was to support the arts locally and provide a forum for area artists to meet professionally and share their knowledge. Other goals were to provide opportunities to exhibit, show and market the works of the membership. Open Membership would be the goal with a juried system for a second level of membership known as an Exhibiting Member.

2The Artisans Guild has been quite busy over the more than a decade since its inception. There have been many opportunities for the membership in education, support and marketing. With several exhibiting shows by the Guild, and promotion of other opportunities for its members, the Guild looks now and to the future for growth in the arts here on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

The Open Studio and Vineyard Tour, is held in November on Thanksgiving weekend. Juried Guild Members work in a wide variety of media and include both contemporary and traditional work in wood, carvings, stonework, floor cloths, jewelry, hand-formed ceramics, furniture, functional and ornamental glassware, fiber, sculpture  and much, much more.  The 2014 Tour includes stops at one local Vineyard.

Hike the Light!

The Assateague Lighthouse is approximately 1/4 mile away from Chincoteague Island and visitors can drive there from Chincoteague in about 5 minutes. Some people elect to rent bicycles or walk along the trail that leads from Chincoteague over to Assateague Island. The trail is maintained by the National Park Service and Fish and Wildlife Service at Assateague Island. Visitors to the Maryland side of Assateague can drive to this area in about an hour. The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is home of the lighthouse. The lighthouse was constructed in 1833 at a cost of approximately $55,000. It has twin rotating lights that flash one after the other from a height of 154 feet above sea level. The lights can be seen 19 miles out to sea. The Assateague Lighthouse stands 142 feet high with a base that measures over 27 feet in diameter.

The Assateague Lighthouse is an active navigational aid and is in the National Register of Historic places. In 1933 the lighthouse was converted to be electrically operated and it's first light was a candle lantern. The Assateague Lighthouse has warned passing ships and local waterman of the shallow waters off Assateague for many years.

Artists are showcased in the Lighthouse oil shed on a rotating schedule from April through October.

Meet the people who live, work, create and play on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Connected to mainland Virginia by the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, this 70-mile coastal peninsula has been isolated from therest of the state for most of its four-hundred year history. The coastline looks much the same as it did in the early 1600s when the first Europeans stumbled across it. Here you will find the only wild barrier islands remaining on the entire Atlantic seaboard

VA Birding & Wildlife Trail - Eastern Shore Loop

With wildlife watching on the Eastern Shore you can experience some of the best wildlife habitat on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States.

Click on Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries website below to explore the many birding and wildlife viewing sites on the Eastern Shore Loop of the statewide Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail (VBWT).

The Eastern Shore Loop includes world-class wildlife watching at Chincoteague at our northern end, and world-class venues like the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge, Kiptopeke State Park, and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel at our southern end. In between a plethora of sites are available to view a great variety of wildlife. The coastline is indented with countless estuaries and tidal mudflats that, during migrations, can be seething with shorebirds. Pockets of deciduous woodlands provide critical stopover points for migrating songbirds, and the peninsula catches tremendous numbers of raptors that follow the coast on their fall migration flight.
