DIG EM! Kayak Clamming Tour

True Clam Connoisseurs know that Cherrystone Creek on Virginia’s Eastern Shore is the place to go for the world’s best littlenecks. The locals say the only way to make them better is to dig them yourself. On the SouthEast Expeditions Kayak Clamming trip, that’s exactly what you’ll do. As part of our partnership with a local, family owned clam farm, our guides will show you how clam Aqua-culture has grown to become one of the largest industries on the Eastern Shore.

After you learn the tricks of the trade, it’s time to get out of your boats and get to work. You and your family will be digging for your dinner just like Eastern Shore residents have done for generations. The $50 cost of the trip includes your first dozen clams. Additional clams are available at the wholesale market rate. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn how Eastern Shore “Aqua-farmers” raise, care for, and harvest the clams you’ll find in the finest restaurants in the region.

If Aqua-culture seems like a little more culture than you prefer, we also offer a “Wild Clam Wrangling” Kayak Tour. Get down and dirty on the Seaside of the Shore and learn how to “sign” for wild clams. The cost is the same, but what you take home for dinner depends on the skills you develop in the marsh.

Kayak Winery Tour   --   Eastern Shore
Client Pic

The country’s only authentic Kayak Winery Tour delivers you to the historic shores of award-winning Chatham Vineyards. No experience necessary to paddle the serene waters beneath a soaring osprey and take in unspoiled farm and forest vistas. At the boutique winery learn the vine to wine story while you enjoy a tasting with the owners. Chatham stands on land farmed for four centuries and first patented in 1640. It was named after William Pitt, the Earl of Chatham and friend of the American Revolution. On the return paddle you’ll pull up to a tiny creek isle with your favorite vintage aboard. Time to toast your good fortune in finding the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Due to popular demand, SouthEast Expeditions is proud to offer a second Kayak Winery Tour opportunity at Holly Grove Vineyards. In addition to beautiful locations on the water, Chatham and Holly Grove both have well earned reputations for producing excellent award winning wines year after year. For more adventurous paddlers, we can even double up and visit both wineries on a Full Day Kayak Winery Tour.

Hike the Light!

The Assateague Lighthouse is approximately 1/4 mile away from Chincoteague Island and visitors can drive there from Chincoteague in about 5 minutes. Some people elect to rent bicycles or walk along the trail that leads from Chincoteague over to Assateague Island. The trail is maintained by the National Park Service and Fish and Wildlife Service at Assateague Island. Visitors to the Maryland side of Assateague can drive to this area in about an hour. The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is home of the lighthouse. The lighthouse was constructed in 1833 at a cost of approximately $55,000. It has twin rotating lights that flash one after the other from a height of 154 feet above sea level. The lights can be seen 19 miles out to sea. The Assateague Lighthouse stands 142 feet high with a base that measures over 27 feet in diameter.

The Assateague Lighthouse is an active navigational aid and is in the National Register of Historic places. In 1933 the lighthouse was converted to be electrically operated and it's first light was a candle lantern. The Assateague Lighthouse has warned passing ships and local waterman of the shallow waters off Assateague for many years.

Artists are showcased in the Lighthouse oil shed on a rotating schedule from April through October.
